photograph of author John Claude BemisOn Thursday, October 24, author John Claude Bemis visited the students at New Century International Middle School.  Bemis’s book The Nine Pound Hammer, the first of The Clockwork Dark series, was the winner of the 2010 North Carolina Juvenile Literature Award and has been on the NC MS Battle of the Books list multiple times.

Students engaged with Bemis during hour long presentations in which he talked about his books and how he comes up with ideas, detailing his creative process as he wrote his most recent series beginning with The Wooden Prince, a unique twist on the classic Pinocchio tale.  He encouraged students to participate in “mindless activities” such as housework, going for walks, exploring nature, etc. to get their best ideas, and he advised them to constantly ask “What if…” questions to keep their creativity and ideas flowing.  Students then had the opportunity to ask the author some great questions.

CCS Middle Grades Career Development Coordinator, Megan McMillen, and NCIMS School Counselor, Gwen Hamby, hosted a career fair for NCIMS students on Wednesday, October 16, 2019.  Students heard presentations from Christina Bowen with Keller Williams, Altria Edens & Blake Bowen with the NC SECU, Jessica Portalatin from the Sheriff’s Department, Ann Sims with Rocket Fizz, Christine Faircloth with Dogwood Animal Hospital, Ieshia West and Laurie Heim with Connections of CC, Tisha Waddell – City Council Member, Elena Kelly – Victims Advocate and Air Force Reservist, and Tiffany Whitfield – CC District Court Judge.

The presenters gave students valuable career and life advice during their visit.  Tisha Waddell advised students, “The quickest way to lose is to not work together as a team.”  After hearing a presentation from each career specialist, students had an opportunity to walk around and visit the career booths that most interested them. Ann Sims reminded the students to follow their passion into their career field, as she had done in becoming an entrepreneur.

“These kids ask the best questions,” reported Blake Bowen of the NC SECU after the successful event.
