Battle of the Books

This is the official logo for the North Carolina middle school Battle of the Books program.

Battle of the Books is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders and requires that students read select books for comprehension in order to answer questions about those books.  Each student participating in Battle of the Books will read from the official list of titles and become very familiar with the characters and stories.

Students will be asked to memorize titles and authors, write BOB formatted questions covering the books they read, and be able to discuss the books they’ve read with others in the club.  We also have an Google Classroom for students to post their thoughts on what they are reading, and participating students will be given access to http://www.mybobteam.com/ for online practice from home.

Initially, practices will break into our expert groups and focus on one title at a time.  Please make sure that your student has read the assigned title prior each week’s meeting.  All practices will be held until 4:00.  Please make sure that someone is here to pick up your student by 3:55.  After the winter break, we will do two practices per week in preparation for competition.

From the students initially involved in Battle of the Books, a team of no more than 12 students will be chosen for competition.  These students will become “experts” on their select BOB titles.  The Battle of the Books team members will receive BOB team shirts, participation medals, and other incentives.

The competition will be held in early spring and resembles a spelling bee type format with students being asked a question about a book with the correct response always being the title and author of the book.  Students do, however, get to confer with their teammates before answering each question.  Everyone who makes the final team will participate on competition day.
