Students and staff at New Century International Middle School have been bringing in soda tabs to help pay off library overdue fees since January.  Mrs. Sands, NCIMS Media Coordinator, offers students ten cents towards their library overdue fees for each tab they bring in.  Students who don’t have fees of their own are encouraged to bring in tabs to apply towards other students’ debts.  In fact, one eighth grader, Austin M., brought in enough soda tabs to cover all of the overdue fees for the whole school at that time.  NCIMS Custodian, Chad Slade, also contributed to the cause by bringing in gallon jugs full of tabs that his family had been collecting.

“I was inspired by a friend who collects the tabs in her elementary classroom.  Last year, her school collected over 50 pounds of soda tabs to donate.  So, I thought this would be a great way to offer students a chance to pay off their library overdue fees while teaching kindness towards others and providing a community service to the Ronald McDonald House,” said Sands.

The tabs will go to the Ronald McDonald House of Durham & Wake.  They take the tabs in for aluminum recycling to help offset their operating costs.  Anyone is invited to bring soda tabs in to help support this worthy cause.
