NCIMS gentlemen perform Dragon Dance. On April 28, 2017, New Century International Middle School hosted our inaugural Culture Night.  The evening began with a dramatic Chinese dragon dance performed by some of our NCIMS eighth grade gentlemen.  The Chinese dragon dance is a traditional dance performed not only for Chinese New Year but for many festive occasions.  The silk flexible dragon is manipulated by male dancers who move the dragon to simulate the mythical river spirit.

The NCIMS orchestra and band performed songs from around the world to the delight of the audience.  Guest speaker Hammed O Adejare, a Fulbright Scholar from Nigeria, shared information about the language and culture of his people.  Additional Fulbright Scholars, Qi Zhihong from China and Haekyoung Park from Korea, spoke with visitors about their native lands, as well.  Singers Jasmine Woosley and Brooklyn Jackson from 71st High School sang for the audience in Chinese, and NCIMS students performed both a Chinese fan dance and a traditional Spanish dance.  The final performance of the night featured a variety of authentic dances from the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.

The festivities included students and parents participating in an international scavenger hunt.  Students were given passports with questions that could only be answered by visiting 13 different countries in 6 continents.  In each country they discovered artifacts, games, and traditional crafts.  NCIMS students guided our guests through their countries, sharing the wealth of knowledge they had gathered throughout the year, and world games were held in the multipurpose room for students and parents to play.  Attendees were also able to taste free samples and purchase food from local ethnic restaurants. Culture night was a large and diverse evening at NCIMS.  This event is sure to become a prominent annual tradition for the community.
